Computational Mathematics and Probabilistic Machine Learning#
The inaugural MARS Annual Symposium will take place from midday on Wednesday 9 September to midday on Friday 11 September 2026 at Lancaster University, UK.
Hosted by MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems, the symposium will bring together researchers working at the interface of mathematics, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The event will provide a forum for sharing recent advances, discussing open challenges, and building connections across communities developing the mathematical foundations of reliable, effective, and real-world AI.
MARS is a UK centre for research and teaching mathematics underpinning applications of Artificial Intelligence to real-world systems. Based in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Lancaster University, MARS combines applied mathematics with modern AI methods to develop solutions with scientific, economic, environmental, and societal impact.
Scope#
The focus of this year’s symposium is computational mathematics and probabilistic machine learning, including topics from the following themes:
- Probabilistic Generative Modelling
- Bayesian Learning and Optimisation
- Sampling Algorithms and Monte Carlo Methods
- Optimisation and Training Dynamics for Machine Learning
The programme will include invited talks, contributed presentations, and opportunities for discussion and networking. We particularly welcome participation from researchers whose work connects mathematical methodology with modern machine learning and real-world applications.
